        Three methods to improve spoken English

        Imitation:Imitation is one of the main methods of learning spoken language,In the “M7 English Listening and Speaking Teaching Method” invented by WECL's teachers, the “Model” is put in an important position, and comparison is the key of imitation. Reading makes good English. By reading out loud and finding the differences between you and native speakers, you can not only practice pronunciation and intonation, but also enhance the sense of language, and thus practice both your mouth and your ears. 

        Recitation:As we all know, great importance is attached to the recitation input method in the traditional Chinese language teaching. By recitation, students can consolidate their knowledge, bear in mind vocabularies, sentence patterns and fixed expressions, and thereby enrich their accumulations of the language. The old saying “after reciting three hundred Tang poems, you will naturally become a poet or a chanter” is the best interpretation of this learning method. The problem that the students now have is that they have so limited accumulations that they find it extremely difficult to learn oral English.

        The author believes that recitation definitely provides benefits and no downsides in the process of learning oral English. The recitation input method is based on the second language acquisition theory of Krashen, an applied linguist in the United States. Krashen believes that the acquisition of language is inseparable from the input of the language; the language input from the outside world is a necessary condition for language acquisition. By recitation, students are able to get in touch with the English language they are learning, deepen their understanding of the knowledge on the language, and learn to express their ideas in authentic English, thus ultimately improving oral English. 

        Practice:Spoken language is an oral output activity. Cognitive theory has proved that learners’ positive perception and integration of language output helps to strengthen benign brain stimulation, promote the internalization of knowledge, and improve speaking skills. That is to say, to master spoken language, we have to actually use the language. Practice makes the best memory. There are diverse forms of practice. Some students complain that they do not have a good environment for learning English, and cannot find foreign teachers to communicate with. These are not unconquerable difficulties. We should speak English anytime anywhere, of course, on the premise of not interfering others. 

        If you practice spoken English alone, you can try the conversations. You can play different roles, and act them in different tones and voices. Or, you can act as the two contestants in a debate, and initiate an eloquent debate. This can also develop your rigorous logics and broaden your mentality. You can also talk to yourself, and describe a person, a thing, or your feelings. With numerous practices, we will have more profound experience of the accumulated oral expressions and master them in a better way. Through repeated input – output exercise, I believe that your oral English level will surely be improved.
